Archipelago Brewery is back in business! I finally got the chance to see the new brewery…and it’s very shiny. Beautiful facility.

Archipelago Brewery Company was first established in Singapore in 1931 by German brewery Beck’s. In 1939 the brewery was seized by the British government as an asset of war. In 1941, after realizing they didn’t know how to run a brewery, England sold the brewery to Malayan Breweries, which today is Asia Pacific Breweries.

Malayan Breweries then built a new brewery in the 50’s and shifted production to the new, larger brewery, leaving the smaller brewery seldom-used.

Asia Pacific Brewing decided a couple years ago that Archipelago should be revived, using the fusion between asian cooking and european brewing to showcase the new beers.

Desserts are often unnecessary, takingmore time, labor, and money than they return in foodvalue. Often they add the extra proteid or carbohydratewhich overloads the digestive organs. After a heartydinner, an egg dessert, for instance, containing sufficientnourishment for the main dish of luncheon, is out ofplace. If, when planning, you can say to yourself, There are two cupfuls of milk, three or four eggs,sugar, etc., in that dessert, and that is all unnecessary,you will find yourself planning more and more simple,wholesome things. Steamed Rice. Molded and Garnished with Cherries. JUST HOW TO MAKE DESSERTS 245 ful of mixed citron, seeded raisins, and currants. Bakeor boil this about three-quarters of an hour. Serve hotwith hard sauce. Grandmothers Strawberry Shortcake Stem two boxes of strawberries. Reserve one cupfulof the nicest berries for the top of the shortcake. Mashthe remainder, add a half-cupful of sugar, and stir aminute to dissolve the sugar. Sift one pint of flour witha half-teaspoonful of salt and two level teaspoonfuls ofbaking powder. Rub in one tablespoonful of butter, andadd enough milk just to moisten. Knead quickly, androll out in the shape of the pan in which it is to bebaked. Brush with milk, and bake in a quick oven fortwenty minutes. Pull it apart without cutting—youcan do this easily with two forks. Remove a portion (ifthe crumb from the center, butter both pieces, place thebottom on the serving-dish, pour over the mashed berries,put on the top, garnish it neatly with the whole berries,
